If you have ever bought a t-shirt online and been disappointed by how thin, floppy, or shapeless it felt — GSM is why. Understanding GSM is the single most important thing you can know when buying streetwear in India.
GSM = Grams per Square Metre
The higher the GSM, the heavier, thicker, and more structured the fabric. Most brands do not want you to know their GSM — because it is low.
The GSM Scale — What Each Weight Means
Ultra-Lightweight
Extremely thin. Semi-transparent. Not for streetwear.
Standard Lightweight
Used by most fast fashion brands. Lacks structure for oversized silhouettes.
Mid-Weight
Noticeable upgrade. Better drape. Minimum worth considering for streetwear.
Heavyweight Premium — THE GOLD STANDARD
Holds drop-shoulder silhouette perfectly. Opaque. Premium feel. Never clings. This is where streetwear starts.
240 GSM vs 180 GSM — The Real Difference

Hold a 180 GSM tee up to light. You will see your hand through it. Hold a 240 GSM tee up to the same light. Nothing. Put on the 240 GSM tee — the shoulder sits exactly where it should. After thirty washes, it looks exactly the same.
How to Check GSM Before You Buy Online
- Look for the GSM specification in the product description — serious brands always list it
- If GSM is not listed, assume it is 160–180 GSM
- Check for 100% combed cotton — superior to polyester blends at the same weight
- Read reviews for phrases like 'thinner than expected' — those are GSM red flags
